Nic moc. Chtělo by to lepší trénink.

Did you ever wonder why 'calculus' refers both to a type of math and the plaque deposits that form on teeth? I have, so I looked it up.

Both come from the Latin word calx, meaning limestone.

The term came to be associated with math through the use of stones or pebbles for counting.

It came to be associated with dental plaque because it's a stony material that forms on teeth. (It's also used for other mineralized secretions of the body, like kidney stones).

So, there it is. Calculus is counting with rocks. Calculus is rocks on your teeth.

V klidu zase vrátím do budky.

It's #EarthDay 🌍, meaning it's also exactly two years since the publication of #LifeBeyondUs!

How do science fiction authors and scientists view the search for life - on Mars, Venus, exoplanets - and all burning questions that go with it?

Is it safe to fly with a Tunnock's Teacake? Tests carried out 60 years after ban.

Scientists have carried out tests to see if it is safe to fly with a Tunnock’s Teacake, 60 years after they were banned by the RAF.

The ban was put in place when a packet of teacakes exploded during a flight in 1965, leaving the pilot, controls and windows covered in marshmallow and chocolate.

Google are breaking my mittens - Sonofa. Twelve years ago I knitted a pair of “self-replicating mittens” (web-goddess.org/archive/14046) with a QR code that pointed you to the pattern for the mittens, and I entered them in the Sydney Royal Easter Show. I was pretty proud of my cleverness. In the blog post (web-goddess.org/archive/11192) where I talked about making the mittens, I said:

I wanted my code to be as simple as possible, so I needed to use a URL shortener to mask my intended address. I settled on using Google‘s, reasoning that it was likely to be around the longest. (Though who knows these days, right?)

You can guess what’s happened, right? Google URL Shortener links will no longer be available (developers.googleblog.com/en/g…) as of August this year.

Bastards are breaking my mittens. Perhaps I’ll have to add some embroidery. web-goddess.org/archive/56383

Here's the current status of our minion-despicable family. I designed Gru myself, the rest is based on patterns from Ravelry.

👀 #TIL Monopoly wasn't invented by the Parker Brothers, nor the man they gave it credit for. In 1904, Monopoly was originally called The Landlord's Game, and was invented by a radical woman. Elizabeth Magie's original game had not one, but two sets of rules to choose from.
One was called "Prosperity", where every player won money anytime another gained a property. And the game was won by everyone playing only when the person with the least doubled their resources. A game of collaboration and social good.
The second set of rules was called "Monopoly", where players succeeded by taking properties and rent from those with less luck rolling the dice. The winner was the person who used their power to eliminate everyone else.
Magie's mission was to teach us how different we feel when playing Prosperity vs Monopoly, hoping that it would one day change national policies.
When the Parker Bros adopted the game, they erased the "Prosperity" rules and celebrated "Monopoly".
